My Story

I took a service trip to Guatemala in the summer of 2024, with an organization called School the World. On the trip I worked in a small rural community where families lived in poverty, and young children had poor resources for their education. As a group, we played and connected with these children during recess, and we helped paint and cement two new classrooms for their school.

After my trip, I was sent a video  of all the Guatemalan children in the classroom singing and learning, surrounded by the walls that I painted, and the floors that I cemented. These children all have a very special place in my heart, and watching this video made me feel so grateful to have been able to have helped these children. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to enrich others' lives, and I want to make this same impact in the community of Boston, for people who do not have enough to eat, or a place to sleep at night. The goal of my project is to enable other people my age to feel this same way, and see how important, powerful, and how proud it feels to be able to help others. Community service is not only about donating money; it is about forming connections with the people you are helping, to fully appreciate and feel proud of the work that was accomplished. I ultimately want people my age, the new generation, to stand up to societal issues, spread awareness, be determined to work, and most of all, to care and appreciate how privileged we are for the chance to help others.
